This is one of the most popular drawings I did during my 'glamour' period between 1976-78. I drew actresses like these, and was increasing my skill in techniques of rendering in pencil. This took 2 weeks to render, from a 3' x 4' photo, and I used no enlarging machines for it. The size of the art is approx. 19' x 23' in charcoal pencil, done in May 1977.
Ann Sothern Charcoal Drawing
This was one of my earliest efforts, done shortly after graduating High School in 1976. I never took any art classes there, my first class was in Community College that year. It was drawn in charcoal pencil on paper, from a photo, taken circa 1940, and took about 4 days to draw. Size is 12' x 18'.
Carol Lombard Charcoal Drawing
This was the last and most ambitious piece from my 'glamour' period, a pastel on velour paper, done in 2 weeks in August 1978. I shortly began doing exclusively Sci/Fi/Fantasy paintings afterward, and was accepted at Art Center College of Design a year later. I have only done one similar work since then. This color painting was done from a B&W photo shot around 1940.
Carol Lombard Pastel Drawing
Originally started in 1977, I happened to be reading an old biography of Vivian Leigh when I came across an old drawing I did in my 'glamour drawing' days, just after high school, before turning to Sci-Fi painting around 1978. It needed more work, so, I used Photoshop to finish it to my present standard. The original photo this was taken from (around 1940) was gone, so I finished it by memory. Overall I think it's a fairly accurate portrait. I did the original in charcoal on paper, and used the 'film grain' feature in Photoshop to simulate the texture to match the original drawing.
